A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its duties in national works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
